π’οΈ Oil & Pumpjack
A machine that pulls crude oil out of real oil fields.
A barrel of crude oil counts 50 coins, and you do not have to dig for it.
On this page
Crude oil comes from the pumpjack. There are 120 real oil fields on the world map, exactly where oil is produced in reality. How strong a field is depends on its real daily output, not on the reserves in the ground. Only 55 out of 242 countries have any oil at all. France and Japan are among the most settled countries on the server and have none.
The live map has a layer of its own for the oil fields. It is switched off at first, everyone turns it on themselves.
Building the pumpjack
The plan is an ordinary recipe in the crafting grid. The shape is the pumpjack itself, seen from the side.
| Left | Middle | Right |
|---|---|---|
| Diamond | Block of iron | Anvil |
| Chain | Block of iron | Piston |
| Block of iron | Block of iron | Furnace |
Every ingredient stands for a part: the diamond is the drill head, the iron blocks are beam and frame, the anvil is the counterweight, the chain is the polished rod, the piston is the connecting rod and the furnace is the motor. All together that costs you around 74 iron and one diamond.
The test drill
The test drill tells you whether there is oil below you. It costs one spyglass and four iron ingots: the spyglass at the top centre, the whole middle row in iron ingots below it, and the fourth ingot at the bottom centre. Take one with you before you carry a pumpjack halfway around the world.
How you produce
- Switch on the oil field layer on the live map and pick a field.
- Go there and check with the test drill whether there really is oil below you.
- Set the pumpjack up on the field.
- Fill in coal. One unit is enough for one barrel, a block of coal counts as nine.
- Come by once a day, empty the tank and top up the coal.
How much comes out
| Tier | Real daily output | Barrels per hour |
|---|---|---|
| World class | over 1 million barrels | 2 |
| Large | 200,000 to 1 million | 1.5 |
| Medium | 50,000 to 200,000 | 1 |
| Small | 10,000 to 50,000 | 0.5 |
| Remainder | under 10,000 | 0.25 |
The tank holds 24 barrels. The pumpjack keeps collecting while nobody is nearby, but only twelve hours back. On the strongest field the tank is therefore full after twelve hours, and production stands still until you empty it.
Four fields produce nothing at all: Brent, Kingfish, Schoonebeek and Maui. That is not a bug, that is reality. The hologram above the machine tells you so.
The reserve of a field
Every field has a reserve of 90 days of full production. If it drops below 30 percent, 20 percent are added. So a field somebody pumps every day does not last three months.
Protection and theft
- Only the person who set the pumpjack up may break it.
- Anyone else may siphon 40 percent of the current contents, at most once in twelve hours.
- If the owner has been offline for 60 days, anybody may break it.
- If the pumpjack stands inside a claim, every member of that claim may empty it.
- With the nation perk guard duty, theft drops from 40 to 20 percent.
The rule slows itself down: only whole barrels are handed out, rounded down. If you empty daily you lose next to nothing. If you stay away for a week, it costs you.
What you earn from it
One barrel of crude oil counts 50 coins. If you empty your tank the regular way and belong to a nation, the levy goes into the nation treasury as money. Siphoning is free of it, theft is not taxed.
There is no command for the pumpjack. Everything runs through the window that opens at the machine itself.
On phone and console
On phone and console the window at the pumpjack opens as a form instead of a chest. You tap the entry in the list and confirm.
What often goes wrong
The pumpjack produces nothing although there is coal in it.
It is not standing on an oil field. The hologram says so. Check the spot with the test drill first.
Production stands still and the hologram reports no fuel.
Top up the coal. One unit is enough for one barrel, a block of coal counts as nine.
Part of your oil is suddenly missing from the tank.
Somebody siphoned it, at most 40 percent. Empty it more often and there is hardly anything left for thieves.
